Earth porn photo of the day 4/25/2013 Bern, Switzerland [5349x2000]
- date: April 25, 2013
Most of this series has focused primarily on totally natural scenes, however in my time I've come across a lot of really stunning photographs of man-made scenes, like the picture above. Obviously I'm not going to start posting pictures of the Empire State Building or anything, but I'm slowly broadening the scope of the shots I submit to include things that are less than 100% natural-made. Also, Switzerland is a ridiculously beautiful country.

Everest 2013: Beaten by 60 years. [Himalayan climbing season thread]
- date: April 6, 2013
On 29 May, 1953, the first two human beings, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, set foot on the summit of Mt. Everest. Since this historic mountain ascent, literally thousands of people have made it meaningless and irrelevant. Hundreds of climbers each year push the very limits of their checkbooks in order to afford the opportunity to stand in line at high altitude, waiting patiently in low oxygen environments for their journey to culminate in obscurity, their name to forever be forgotten as just another statistic, one of hundreds to ascend this year. Unless, of course, they die, in which case they will be well known for years to come. After all, their mummified, frost coated corpse will decorate that rock for years as the next generation use it as a landmark to note their progress.
Hyperbole aside, we're fast approaching cilmbing season on Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world, with its peak towering 8848 meters (29029 ft.) above sea level. It is a tall
Reading Challenge 2013: That still only counts as one
- date: December 27, 2012
It's never too late to join in. Make a post with your goal and reach it by December.
Congratulations to everyone who reached their goals in 2012. Let's do it again!
What counts as a book?
Basically anything, if you want it to. This is a personal challenge for your own betterment - if you want to read the entire collection of Star Wars novels, feel free. Audiobooks and graphic novels count at your own discretion. Short stories probably won't count, but short story collections do.
How does it work?
Make a post with how many books you want to challenge yourself to read in 2013. 52 is the perennial favorite, followed by 26, but you can make your goal whatever you want. You then post what you have read - most people choose to do it at the end of each month, or every 10 books or so, depending on their preference. Number the books as you continue through the year to assist with tracking. When you've reached your goal, say something, and I'll update the OP. Bask in the glory of re
The Farm 2013. Flash Fiction and Snippets Critique Hub (<1000 Words)
- date: January 8, 2013
You can post flash fiction and snippets of work here if you want other people to critique it. I expanded the word limit because of flash fiction (usually) being listed at =<1000 words. Please don't abuse that.
1) If you want to post a whole piece that is a little over 1000 words but is a complete flash fiction piece, that's fine.
2) If it's over 1100 or so, just post a new thread and make people aware of it here.
3) If you want a critique, post one first. 1:1 ratio.
4) Put effort into your critique: no "I like it X" or "I did't like Y". That mean's that if you get called out for giving low effort crits, we're going to blackball you and pretend you don't exist.
Who Greenlighted 2013: The world may have ended, but the bad movies remain!
- date: January 2, 2013
It's a new year with a new batch of awful awfulness and delightful awfulness. But before we look to the future, we must respect the past and go over the amazeballs bombs of 2012!
Where would we be if the world didn't have The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure? Probably with plenty of lunar colonies. Even though Oogieloves came out in August, it retroactively set mankind back decades. The brainchild of a marketing genius who decided to give the world a movie where 1 year olds could interact with the screen while their parents paid attention to their iPhones, the concept failed to catch on as any child older than 3 instantly got bored, and all children younger got bored after 30 minutes or so. It flopped hard, making just $445,000 in its opening weekend. Oogieloves beat out Delgo as the record setting worst box office performance for a film opening in over 2000 theaters. Oogieloves finished with just over $1 million gross, costing $20 million and spending $40 on marketing

No stuffing jokes allowed: Turkey Trip 2013
- date: February 11, 2013
I am taking advantage of a confluence of air travel deals available to me and flying to Turkey in exit row seats from Tucson AZ to Istanbul for under $500 out of pocket round trip. I had a $500 trip voucher from American Airlines for taking a voluntary bump on a flight to DC in October, so I've used that to go from Tucson to IAD, then from JFK to Tucson at no cost (plus $67 in upgrade fees to get exit row seats on both the big cross country flights ). Once I arrive in Dulles this Tuesday, I fly from there to Istanbul direct via Turkish airlines, then return via Turkish airlines direct from Istanbul to JFK. The international portion of my travel is costing me a grand total of $424.90. Scored exit rows on both those flights for free too. My Turkey internal travel between major areas is all on intracountry Turkish airlines flights, ended up being something like $250 for all of them, which seemed better than spending 36 or more total hours on buses.
I'm laying over in NYC for a few days
2013 Powered by STEAMworks games
- date: January 12, 2011
What is STEAMworks?
STEAMworks is an API for gaming developers. They can use it for free to include a set of STEAM features and solutions.
More detailed info: http://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/
So, if a game includes STEAMworks, what exactly means?
All the games listed below have ONE OR MORE features mentioned above. See their respective store pages for more individual information.
But why some games are marked as "* only STEAM version"?
A game including STEAMworks features means you MUST use STEAM in order to play the game. Some developers don't want to force their customers and they prefer to develop different versions of the game. So in these cases, ONLY the version bought on STEAM have STEAMworks features.
